As part of proactive approach, NDMA has initiated a series of Simulation Exercises at national and provincial level. In continuation, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with PDMA Balochistan and development partners held one-of-its-kind Multi Hazards Provincial Level Simulation Exercises at Quetta Club from November 15 to 17, 2023.
The purpose of conducting multi-hazard mock exercises was to enhance the preparedness and response capabilities of Balochistan's disaster management agencies to deal with emergency like situation.
At Sim Ex, six syndicates were formed consisting representatives of PDMA Balochistan, Armed Forces, Humanitarian Organisations, Districts of Zob & Quetta, District Naseerabad and District of Kalat & Makran. These Syndicates subjected to drill the preparedness and response plans covering a range of topics to enhance the disaster management cycle including components of gender and child protection. The syndicates also emphasized the need for effective coordination and cooperation among all agencies involved in disaster management and relief activities. The participants applied the learned concepts to respond to simulated disasters at local and national levels and showcased their mock exercises results on scenario based situations on floods, cyclones, earthquakes and forest fires.
Balochistan Caretaker Minister for Home and Tribal Affairs, Muhammad Zubair Jamali inaugurated the Simulation Exercises and appreciated the efforts of NDMA for a proactive approach to deal with disasters and emergencies. Whereas Balochistan Caretaker Minister for Education and Tourism Prof. Dr. Qadir Bakhsh graced the closing ceremony on 17 November. He commended NDMA for arranging a Simulation Exercise at the provincial level in Quetta and involving academia in events of this nature to enhance preparedness for potential hazards. Other key speakers included Director General NDMA’s Think Tank National Institute of Disaster Management, Mr. Tanveer Piracha, Executive Director (Plans) of NDMA, Mr. Raza Iqbal, Director General PDMA Balochistan Jahanzaib Khan Ghorezai and Director General Balochistan Civil Services Academy Mr. Hafeez Jamali spoke on the occasions.
The Participants expressed their gratitude & admiration for Sim Ex and its approach which helped them learn concepts in a better and more practical way. They also acknowledged the role of NDMA in promoting resilience and proactive disaster readiness. Participants noted Simulation Exercise all-encompassing, much-needed, well-imparted and a wonderful knowledge-sharing endeavour with an aim of spreading the words to others for good of all and as a national service.
The syndicates emphasized the importance of planning and strategic development in effectively dealing with various types of disasters. They conveyed that they have acquired valuable knowledge and skills to improve their emergency response capabilities.
